Choose classic colors
The first rule of thumb for choosing vintage that will never go out of style will be to choose pieces that are effortlessly classic by choosing colors that you can put with anything. This will be your muted browns, navy, black, and white. This way you will always have the option of mixing and matching these pieces with something more modern. The classic vintage DKNY two-piece combo pictured below is an example of pieces that will forever stand the test of time!
If you do tend to stray towards more colorful eye-catching color, like the pieces from our Sweater Weather collection, ensure that it is your statement piece and try to refrain from mixing in more colors as you want the vintage piece to really be the star of the outfit.
Stay away from themed looks
If you’re going to an 80’s party then by far throw on that bubble jacket with those parachute pants, but if you’re just going to work maybe choose one or the other. While it’s fun to intermix pieces from different decades into your wardrobe, you don’t want to wind up looking like you just stepped out of an MC Hammer video.
Try using one piece from the decade, I’m partial to the 1980s and 1990s so this coat is so reminiscent of the oversized coats that would have been worn in movies like Pretty n Pink and Say Anything that I just had to have it and it always stands out.

Look for quality
It should go without saying that you want to opt for pieces that are high quality. Look for tailored pieces that include things like boning in dresses and exquisite stitching as these details scream quality. Choose items that are well crafted and won’t fall apart over time.

Stay away from trends
While trends come and go you don’t want to base your entire vintage wardrobe on a trend. Don’t wait for a certain trend to come back in style to wear it, simply wear what you like and looks good on you.
